Home > 20th Century > World War I > Muslim Moroccan Memorial Verdun

Built as one of the three memorials at Verdun to honor the major religions of those who fought and died during the fighting at Verdun. There are 592 tombs for Muslims in the cemetery in front of the Verdun Ossuary and they represent troops from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia; these headstones are carefully placed to face toward Mecca. The memorial has columns supporting an Islamic dome that covers the original small 1959-erected stele to honor those who served.
