Mary Ludwig Hays accompanied her husband during his time serving in the Continental Army during the Revolution and she became legendary for the help and nursing she offered to the men. During the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 she valiantly helped man the cannon after her husband was gravely wounded. George Washington personally thanked her for her efforts. This memorial stands next to her grave in the historic “Old Graveyard” in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
