The large stone cenotaph in the Yale Commons courtyard honors those men from Yale University who lost their lives in the fighting in World War I. On one side is a gold gilt inscription honoring those who lived up to the values of the university and gave their lives “that freedom might not perish from this Earth.” It was erected by university alumni in 1926.
