This magnificent memorial at Fort Leavenworth Kansas honors the African American soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalary Regiments that served from 1866 to World War II. These units served on the Western US frontier as well as several American wars and became some of the most decorated units in US military history. Eighteen members were earned Medals of Honor. The center of the memorial is a beautiful sculpture of a mounted African American cavalryman reigning back his horse and carrying his carbine. The horse has his left raised and the statue base rests atop a ledge of a waterfall. Surrounding the statue are individual memorials and tributes to individuals and units.
