This large granite obelisk marker honors the First Voluntary Cavalry who were formed to fight in the Spanish American War. The engraved plaque on the west side includes the unit's insignia and states that it was erected to honor the unit's fallen soldiers. On the three other sides of the monument are inscribed the battles in which the unit served and the names of those who were lost. The monument was dedicated by Theodore Roosevelt.
