Description
An account of the resource
The New York City memorial to the Vietnam War and its veterans is located in what was once known as Jeanette Park (named for the flagship of failed Arctic Expedition in the late 1800s). The Plaza was renamed in 1982 and the Memorial placed here. The centerpiece of the plaza is a large wall of glass blocks onto which are inscribed poems, letters and diary entries written by the veterans themselves; at the base of the wall is a granite shelf. This part of the plaza was designed by Peter Wormser and Williams Fellows (architects) and writer/veteran Joseph Ferrandino. In 2001 extensive renovations enhanced the plaza with a new entrance and landscaping as well as more information. The plaza includes a walkway of granite pylons with bronze plaques containing the inscribed the names of all 1, 741 U.S. military personnel from New York City who are listed as killed in action, missing in action or prisoners of war from the conflict in Vietnam from 1957-1975. There is also a large flat steel map of Vietnam that includes sites of battles. The memorial plaza was dedicated on May 4, 1985 and then again on November 9, 2001 when it was redesigned.

This memorial was conceived and created by Jeanne and Dr. Victor Westhphall originally as a memorial to their son 1st Lt. Victor David Westphall who was along with 15 other soldiers was killed at Con Thien Vietnam in 1968. They began the Memorial in 1971 with the funds from their sons insurance policies and constructed a Peace Chapel. Over time the memorial grew in size and scope and was donated to the New Mexico Veterans Administration. This was the first major memorial created for the Vietnam War in the country. There is now a small veterans cemetery next to the Memorial as well.

Description
An account of the resource
The first memorial on the National Mall that honors the military service of women is part of the monument to the Vietnam War. Over 11,000 women served in Vietnam during the war; most served as nurses but others also served in intelligence, clerical, photojournalism, and transport duty. This memorial was added after the work of women veterans brought needed attention to this oversight. The sculpture shows three women helping a wounded soldier. There are 8 trees planted around the Memorial site to remember the 8 women nurses -- 7 Army and 1 Air Force -- who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war.

Description
An account of the resource
This iconic memorial on the National Mall honors and remembers those who fought in and especially those who were lost in the US's most divisive conflict -- the Vietnam War. The simple design by young Yale student Maya Lin focuses upon the individual names of the 58,000 lost. The highly polished black granite walls are inscribed with the names in chronological order and radiate out towards the Lincoln and Washington Monuments. The names begin in the center at the highest point. The design met with some criticism and thus both a flag and statue of soldiers was added to the site. The panels reflect the visitor and bring the focus upon the names of those lost in the conflict. Today the site is one of the most visited sites on the National Mall and the many mementos left at the Memorial by visitors have spawned the creation of a Museum to display them. A womens memorial has also been added nearby to show the role women played in the conflict.

Description
An account of the resource
Within the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (also known as the Punchbowl) in Honolulu have been erected Courts of Memorial to honor all those US servicemen and women who have no known final resting place; this includes those whose remains were never recovered, those who are MIA as well as those buried or missing at sea. There are more than 28,000 names listed on the 10 large courts on each side of the stairway and the Court of Honor at the top which also includes a small chapel. Most -- more than 18,000 -- are from World War II in the Pacific (except for the southwest Pacific or Asian mainland which are commemorated at the US Cemetery at Manila, Philippines). There are also more than 8000 names from the Korean War and 2500 from the Vietnam War.
